What hard things are happening in the story right now? Are they happening now?
In the book I am currently reading called Life as We Knew It, by Susan Beth Pfeffer an asteroid strikes the moon and knocks it far beyond the normal circular orbit around earth. It is now drawn closer to earth, about 200X closer. Now everyone is in a struggle, a struggle for food, gas and other necessities. The main character Miranda is afraid of what is happening but manages to get though it. Nobody really know how bad it is going to be so as any other person would they went frantic and bought out stores. it has now gotten so bad that electricity, which was once just a given thing comes on during the day for usually a short time. In some parts tidal waves and volcanic eruptions are occurring more often now because the moon is closer and people are dying. And yes, I know that tsunamis and earthquakes are happening now in this world but the moon is not traveling 200 times closer to earth.
As the story progresses it is very hard for Miranda and her family to get by now because there is a wide scarcity of fresh produce and water. Miranda's mom is divorced and her good friend Peter comes by very often with food to help out. The colder months are upon their family no electricity means no heat. They are forced to use the fire place, Matt Miranda's older brother has to get the wood from in the forest. Everyone is crabby because they are so cold. Now since there is not a lot of food left people are now considering looting. Looting is when a person breaks into a store and shoplifts all of the remaining items. It is a fast way to get merchandise but it is also risky because if you get caught you go to jail and you will not be able to get good food. This story is really interesting and it is very relatable because this is quite accurate if this were to ever happen to us in the real world. People would go crazy, there would be a wide spread panic and food and water would also be scarce.
